1960년대 초, 어느 산골 주막에 30대 남자가 도착한다. 그는 주막 여인의 판소리 한 대목을 들으며 회상에 잠긴다. 그가 어린 시절 살던 마을에 한 떠돌이 소리꾼 유봉이 찾아든다.

유봉은 과부였던 동호의 어머니와 사랑에 빠지고 그들은 함께 마을을 떠난다. 유봉이 데리고 있던 수양딸 송화와 함께 네 식구가 같이 살게되는데 동호의 어머니는 아이를 낳다가 죽는다. 유봉은 송화에게 판소리를, 동호에게는 북을 가르치며 유랑생활을 한다. 송화와 동호는 소리꾼과 고수로 한 쌍을 이루며 자란다.

그들은 유봉과 함께 소리로 먹고 살지만 전쟁이 일어나자 생활은 점점 어려워진다. 소리를 들어주는 사람도 줄어들고 냉대와 멸시 속에 희망없이 살다가 동호는 유봉과 싸우고 떠나버린다.

동호가 떠난 뒤 송화는 소리를 거부하고 유봉은 소리의 완성에 집착하다 급기야 송화의 눈을 멀게 만든다. 유봉은 죽고 눈먼 송화는 밑바닥 삶을 살아간다.

세월이 흘러 동호는 그리움과 죄책감으로 송화와 유봉을 찾아 나선다. 그가 마침내 한 주막에서 송화를 다시 만났을때 송화는 그의 청에 따라 노래를 부르고 그는 북을 친다.
