A Persian Prince tries to solve Princess
<수록곡>
A Persian Prince tries to solve Princess Turandot's three riddles. He fails. He is executed.
Upon seeing Turandot, Calaf is stunned by her beauty. In his fascination he announces that he will attempt to solve the riddles. If he can, he wins her hand. If he cannot, he meets his death.
Between September 5 and 13, 1998, eight open air performances of Turandot were held in the courtyard of the palace, seating 32,000. These were based on a production that conductor Zubin Mehta and director Zhang Yimou created in the spring at Florence's Teatro Comunale for the opera company's Maggio Musicale Festival. It was restaged and adapted to the more grandiose palace setting with nearly 1,500 costumes newly made to be as true to the Ming Dynasty as possible. Chinese royal custom also plays an important role in the production: authentic drums from the Emperor's era announce the start of the opera and large-scale hand decorated panels covered with red and gold leaf take the place of a stage curtain
