1893년 남아프리카 공화국, 인도인으로 보이는 한 젊은 변호사가 기차에서 쫓겨나는 수모를 겪는다. 유색인종이 1등석에 탔기 때문에...남아공의 뿌리깊은 인종차별을 몸소 체험한 그는 남아공에 사는 약7만명 인도인의 권리와 명예를 위해 싸움에 나서게 된다. 자칫 무모해 보이는 이 싸움에 나선 이가 바로 훗날 인도를 독립으로 이끈 장본인이자 정신적 지주인 간디이며, 이 사건은 그의 일생을 바꾸는 결정적인 계기가 되었다. 영화 "간디"는 영국으로부터의 독립과 단결을 위해 인도 전역을 여행하며 무저항, 무폭력을 통해 정의를 부르짖었던 간디의 숭고한 일생을 장대한 스케일로 담아낸 대서사이다.
