노래를 좋아하고 발랄한 성격의 견습 수녀 마리아(줄리 앤드류스). 수녀로서는 적합치 않지만, 그녀의 명랑함을 좋아하는 원장 수녀는 마리아의 장래를 생각해 명문가의 가정교사로 그녀를 추천한다. 해군 대령 출신으로 혼자서 7명의 자녀를 키워온 본 트랩 대령(크리스토퍼 플러머)의 집에 도착한 마리아. 그러나 엄격한 군대식의 교육으로 아이들은 아버지를 두려워하고, 경직되어 있다. 마리아는 짓궂은 아이들의 장난과 대령의 위압적인 태도에도 굴하지 않고, 노래를 통해 집안을 밝고 유쾌한 분위기로 바꾸어 놓는다. 그러는 사이, 마리아는 대령을 사모하게 되지만 대령은 약혼녀를 데리고 오는데...
